In a heartening collaboration, Build-A-Bear Workshop has partnered with Afro Unicorn to introduce a unique line of plush toys that celebrate diversity and empower young Black children. This collection centers around “Unique the Unicorn,” a character designed to reflect and honor the beauty and individuality of children of color.

Meet Unique the Unicorn

Unique the Unicorn is more than just a plush toy; she embodies qualities that resonate deeply with young Black children. With her soft brown fur, curly mane and tail, purple and gold hooves, blue horn, and gold crown, Unique stands as a regal and relatable figure. Her character is described as playful, curious, adventurous, and brave—a problem solver and strategic leader who loves singing and dancing.

A Vision of Representation

April Showers, the founder of Afro Unicorn, envisioned a brand that celebrates the uniqueness of women and children of color. Her collaboration with Build-A-Bear marks a significant milestone as the first female, Black-owned business with a licensed character brand in major retailers. This partnership brings representation to the forefront, allowing children to see themselves reflected in their toys.

Customization and Accessories

The Afro Unicorn collection offers various customization options to enhance the play experience. Children can dress Unique in outfits like the Afro Unicorn halter dress or the “Made of Magic” T-shirt, accessorize with a sparkly bow, and even add songs such as “Magical Ride” or “Go Magic…It’s Your Birthday!” to their plush companion. These features allow children to personalize their toys, fostering a deeper connection and sense of ownership.

Parental Insights and Community Reception

The introduction of Unique the Unicorn has been met with enthusiasm from parents and the community. One parent shared, “My daughter loves it. Afro Unicorn is a brand for representation. My daughter loves that it has hair like hers.” Such testimonials highlight the positive impact of the collection in promoting self-esteem and cultural pride among young Black children.

Conclusion

Build-A-Bear’s Afro Unicorn collection is more than just a line of toys; it’s a celebration of diversity, individuality, and empowerment. By bringing Unique the Unicorn into their homes, parents can provide their children with a companion that not only offers comfort and joy but also reinforces the beauty of their unique identities.
