In a world where representation and positive affirmations are vital, Tabitha Brown’s debut children’s book, Hello There, Sunshine, emerges as a beacon of inspiration for young Black girls aged 5 to 10. Affectionately known as “America’s Mom,” Brown channels her nurturing spirit into a story that encourages children to recognize and embrace their inner light.

The narrative follows young Tabitha, a spirited girl who begins each day by greeting the sun, finding joy in its radiant presence. However, when she awakens to a cloudy day and the sun is nowhere in sight, Tabitha embarks on a heartfelt journey with her puppy, Grady, to find the missing sunshine. Along the way, she engages in acts of kindness—helping neighbors and friends—which leads her to a profound realization: the light she seeks resides within her own heart.

Brown’s inspiration for this tale stems from her own childhood experiences in Eden, North Carolina, and the invaluable lessons imparted by her late mother. She emphasizes the importance of community, kindness, and authenticity—values she hopes to instill in young readers. In an interview with People, Brown shared, “I wanted to share a message to children that they are light! That being kind and helping others can brighten someone’s day!”

The book’s illustrations, crafted by Olivia Duchess, beautifully depict a diverse and vibrant community, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds that make up our world. This representation is crucial for young Black girls, offering them characters and narratives in which they can see themselves and their potential.

Hello There, Sunshine serves as more than just a story; it’s a tool for parents to engage their daughters in conversations about self-worth, resilience, and the power of inner beauty. By highlighting the significance of looking inward for strength and joy, Brown provides a narrative that empowers young girls to shine brightly, regardless of external circumstances.

For parents seeking literature that uplifts and resonates with the experiences of Black girls, Hello There, Sunshine is a heartfelt addition to any child’s bookshelf. It not only entertains but also imparts timeless lessons about the brilliance that lies within each of us.

Hello There, Sunshine is available for purchase through various retailers, including HarperCollins and Barnes & Noble.
